International Baccalaureate

Primary Years Programme

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Primary Years Programme

(PYP) is for students aged 3-12. "

By choosing to implement the PYP, schools will develop students’ academic, social and emotional wellbeing, focusing on international-mindedness and strong personal values. The PYP nurtures independent learning skills, encouraging every student to take responsibility for their learning.

The programme incorporates local and global issues into the curriculum, asking students to look at six related, transdisciplinary themes and to consider the links between them. The themes include ‘who we are’, ‘where we are in place and time’ and ‘how the world works’." www.IBO.org - Find out more about the PYP

PYP Model

Our International Baccalaureate Program of Inquiry outlines for teachers, students, parents, and community members what a student should know (knowledge) and be able to do (skills). In order to conduct purposeful inquiry and in order to be well prepared for a lifetime of learning, students need to master a range of skills. These skills are taught throughout the Primary Years Program in the context of authentic learning experiences.

The Approaches to Learning have been categorized into five interrelated areas including:

Thinking Skills
Research Skills
Communication Skills
Self-Management Skills
Social Skills

Each of these skills is vitally important at every level of education and for a successful life outside the school setting.
